What is a T1 General and how to find it

Did I ask for your full T1 General? Do you need help identifying what it is and where to find it?

What is the T1 General?

A T1 General is your complete income tax return package, if you have an accountant

who filed your taxes they will usually send you a letter describing your tax return which

will be followed by the T1.

What to look for to ensure it's the full T1 General:

1. It will be substantially longer than a Notice of Assessment (often many pages)and includes:

  • Income details from all sources
  • All deductions claimed
  • Tax calculations
  • Any applicable schedules (like T776 for rental income or T2125 for self-employment)

2. For self-employed individuals, it must include the T2125 Statement of Business Activities showing:

  • Gross business income
  • Expenses
  • Net business income

3. For individuals with rental properties, it must include the T776 showing:

  • Rental income and expenses
  • Net rental income/loss

Where to Find the T1 General

The T1 General actually cannot be downloaded directly from CRA My Account - this is a common misconception.

Here's how to get it:

1. From Your Tax Software:

  • Log into the tax software you used (TurboTax, UFile, etc.)
  • Look for an option to download or print your completed return
  • Make sure to select the complete T1 General package, not just a summary

2. From Your Accountant:

  • Contact your accountant who prepared your taxes
  • Request a complete copy of your T1 General for the years needed
